Did you know September is National Yoga Month September?! To celebrate, we're sharing our stories of how we got started on our yoga journey! // "I don't have any really cool story about why I started yoga. It was in 1994 after the birth of my son. I wasn't adjusting to motherhood very well.  I was overwhelmed, tired, and stressed.  For years I had a weekly yoga practice and came to be quite committed to it. It was my weekly decompression valve and if I skipped a week, I really noticed it! // Yoga began to change me when I started practicing more. It really changed me, when I started practicing every day. The first shift was when I committed to a membership at a studio.  What a treat!  I was so excited that I could go to class anytime and any day I wanted instead of trying to make a punch pass last a while. I began to notice changes. I was deeper in my asana practice. I felt more vibrant and relaxed at the same time. // One day, I was sitting in meditation at a park and it just came to me. "You're going to go take that teacher training." I had not previous really put much thought into doing that. During that training, when I began to practice every day, I experienced a major shift, not only in the asanas but in ME. // I became more aware of my thoughts. I began to experience true gratitude and I became WAY less reactive to events around me. My personality had always been pretty fiery and I had admired people who seemed so calm, thoughtful and reflective. I found myself becoming the person I had always wanted to be. // The practice changes you. And when it changes you, it changes those around you. Ultimately, your personal practice of yoga changes the world. We can all agree that being uncomfortable is, well uncomfortable and therefore we tend to steer ourselves away from things that make us uncomfortable. We numb and hide instead of feeling that discomfort. The problem is most of the lessons we’re here to learn require going into the pain or at least breathing into it when it arises. If we run every time we’ll never learn the lesson. This is why it often feels like the same bad things keep happening, it’s because there is still more to learn. ⁣ ⁣ Doing things that are uncomfortable on purpose, like - meditating, power yoga, climbing and hiking, surfing, public speaking, sharing your emotions, karaoke, telling yourself I love you while looking in the mirror, writing a love note to your body, taking a cold shower - desensitizes you to the discomfort, your tolerance for doing uncomfortable things increases. Slowly your bravery muscles strengthen because you know the value of leaning into discomfort. You know that when done with purpose and with care the discomfort is simply molding you into a stronger version of yourself. Lean into discomfort. Ask for help when it becomes painful. I love you.

Hot water anyone? Yes, please.  During the time of taping into the energy of the water element, it is a good opportunity to talk about the importance of water in Ayurveda, particularly hot water and its many benefits.  Hot water aids our digestion, everything cold we take in needs to be heated up by our body, slowing the digestive fire down, just as you pour cold water on fire.  Its releases water soluble toxins, leaving us with a healthier body and a clearer mind.  Sipping hot water throughout the day, helps to keep cravings in bay, less need for in between snack (regular meals should be eaten though), which helps to establish healthier eating habits.  Are you tempted to give is a try?  Should you be a have too much heat in your body already,rather stick with warm/luke warm water. @yoga.matt.london  mastering the Dancer's Pose. ​One of the most challenging balancing backbends. What makes the backbend deeper? To reach Matt's level of the practice, you cannot just be born bendy. First, you need to strengthen the muscles along the lower spine by practising spine extensions and forward folds. Simultaneously work on balancing on one leg, opening the psoas major muscles. Finally - work on extending your in-breath and opening your chest. And then BOOM - after some years of practising you'll be able to do this safely.  So if you see someone practising the dancers pose correctly, be mindful that he took a while to get there! Practice makes a master. 🙏  #dancerspose #backbend #thelightnessofbeing 📷 @pablotsukayama
