Some of you have followed #theadventuresofphyllis / #catwithatrunk The detective work has certainly revealed a story of #adventure. A couple of months ago Runar rescued a #vintagesuitcase at auction. Its stickers reveal bits and pieces of its exciting #voyages, and a little digging through #archives, passenger lists, marriage certificates and so on has uncovered much much more. P Lillywhite on the #cunard sticker on the suitcase was Phyllis Margaret Lillywhite, nee Bellamy, born 11 November 1904. She had blue eyes. And a shrapnel wound in her right leg. She married Bryant Lillywhite in Westminster #london in 1938. Bryant had lost his first wife Marjorie in 1934. Bryant and Marjorie had a daughter, Annette, in 1927. Phyllis and Bryant lived in Woking, England, and later moved to #haslemere to a lovely house. Bryant worked in #shipping, and together Phyllis and Bryant travelled the world on first class on some of the most epic ships of the 20th Century: The went to New York on the #rms QueenElizabeth #rms QueenMary and SS Washington. They stayed at the fabulous #drakehotel. They travelled to #quebec on the #rmsfranconia (which was also #winstonchurchill and the British delegation´s HQ during the #yaltaconference ), and once on the #rmsempressofcanada (which during WWII had delivered a top secret delegation of British scientists and modern technology such as the #cavitymagnetron and radar technology as part of the Tizard Mission). They travelled to #bombay and #srilanka, and the #frenchriviera. Bryant served in #wwi, and had meticulously written his #diary from the front lines. His family has recently published Bryant’s diaries. https://www.worldwaronediary.co.uk Bryant and Phyllis travelled together all over the world, and when Bryant passed away in 1974 Phyllis kept travelling. She passed away in 1998 at the age of 94. She would drive a large Bentley. When collecting information I have formed an image of Phyllis as adventurous in spirit. I think that image is
September 13th 1917, Thursday Rev at 6:30 am. Paraded at 9:30 am for washing our clothes. After that we were paraded for the baths at 11:15. Muster parade at 1:30 pm for drill order for picket duty owing to the disturbances still going on. After a lecture by our Col we were dismissed. Shortly after we paraded again to hear the General of C L speak in reference to the disturbances. Complaints were given to him by a few of the men. Some of our boys went out at 4 pm on picket. Concert by Lena Ashwell Party at 6:30 in Dining Hall. I had to go out on picket at 10 pm after just getting down to it. The weather was breezy and the air was full of sand. We marched to our post and after marching there for ten minutes we were marched back to camp about 11:30. Got down to it after a lot of grooming (groaning?). More detail on these disturbances, since identified as the Etaples Mutiny https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Étaples_mutiny . . . #wwi #ww1 #worldwari #worldwar1 #greatwar #thegreatwar #theyshallnotgrowold #otd #iwm #1917 #neverforget #dennistoun #cavalry #glasgow #onthisday #stables #trenches #mory #boche #bocheline #horses #stables #hesdin #nordpasdecalais #etaples #boulognesurmer #bullring #picket #lenaashwell #disturbances

British Mark I tank coming out of action during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, September 15, 1916. . Colourised by @historyman92 . Today 103 years ago, on September 15, 1916 the Allies launched the Battle of Flers-Courcelette as part of the Battle of the Somme, in which the tank made its first appearance in history. . Since 1914 the British had experimented with tractor-like machines which could cross the wide and deep trenches in an attempt to break through. . It wasn't until July 1915 "Little Willie" was designed, using caterpillar tracks to advance. Little Willie would be the prototype of the Mark I tank, developed in December 1915. . By August 1916 the Mark I tanks were ready for service, though they were very slow and with many mechanical malfunctions. . On September 15, 1916 the British, New Zealand and Canadians attacked at Flers-Courcelette on the Somme. This marked the tank's first deployment in history, as 49 Mark I tanks attacked with the infantry, much to the horror of the German soldiers. One German Lieutenant described. "A tank appeared on the left front of my company position which I immediately attacked with machine-gun and rifle fire and also, as it came closer, with hand grenades. . He crossed the trenches in the area of the company on my left, caused us heavy losses with his flanking machine gun fire on trenches which had to a large extent been flattened, without my men being able to do anything about it." . Many of the primitive tanks suffered mechanical issues or were hit by German artillery and broke down on the battlefield, though the psychological effects they inflicted on the Germans were significant. . In the Battle of Flers-Courcelette the British, New Zealand and Canadian forces managed to break through and advance, aided by the tanks, capturing the High Wood, but at the cost of 29,376 casualties. . Exhaustion among the British soldiers and German reserves halted the British advance, who were unable to exploit the
This vehicle witnessed World War I and is still running. We watched it make a round of the grounds though we were too caught by surprise to catch video. We did capture this demonstration though. We were told it is one of just five like it known to be still surviving. #campdoughboy #worldwari #wwi #livinghistory #campdoughboy2019

WWI research and Women’s Suffrage history combined at Camp Doughboy. This is a 1913 bicycle restored by Doughboy Boswell (pictured here) who specializes in this niche of our history. We learned so much at this exhibit about the role of bicycles in World War I. And of course, we know what Miss Anthony thought of bicycles: “Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” - Susan B.
