Get to Know a Black Author: Andre Iguodala Andre Iguodala is an American professional basketball player who was with the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. The swingman was an NBA All-Star in 2012 and has been named to the NBA All-Defensive Team twice. He is the author of The Sixth Man. The memoir traces Andre’s journey from childhood in his Illinois hometown to his Bay Area home court today. Basketball has always been there. But this is the story, too, of his experience of the conflict and racial tension always at hand in a professional league made up largely of African American men; of whether and why the athlete owes the total sacrifice of his body; of the relationship between competition and brotherhood among the players of one of history’s most glorious championship teams. And of what motivates an athlete to keep striving for more once they’ve already achieved the highest level of play they could have dreamed. On drive, on leadership, on pain, on accomplishment, on the shame of being given a role, and the glory of taking a role on: This is a powerful memoir of life and basketball that reveals new depths to the superstar athlete, and offers tremendous insight into most urgent stories being told in American society today. #goodblackreads#blackauthors#blackwriters#womenwriters#womenauthors#womenofcolor#pocwriters#africanauthors#africanliterature#africanlit#blacklit#blackliterature#bookstagram#andreiguodala#thesixthman#warriors
SLAM Magazine 56 December 2001 Michael Jordan #theslamchronicles On September 11th 2001, one of the most shocking events in western society took place in SLAM’s home, NYC. The news dominated headlines around the world for weeks, months even. Most of us who are old enough to remember it were shook, not knowing what the world would look like after events of that day. Apart from @russbengtson’s message in #thesixthman, this issue of SLAM was business as usual, no politics, just basketball. At the time, that’s perhaps just what we needed. Oh, and this issue’s headline is one of my all time favourites. Michael Jordan came back. Again.

#thesixthman
