On the morning of my last day in Japan I visited Lake Kawaguchiko to see Mt Fuji. I was lucky to get a fabulous view, it was sunny and gorgeous. The previous day, Reiwa day was rainy and completely gloomy. A great goodbye day. #somethingsketchytravels #mtfuji #fujisan #lakekawaguchiko #tsuru #japantravel #japan #independentartists #indianillustrator #illustratorsoninstagram #illustration
Tokyo was so fun for thrifting. I picked up two things, one from Kinji and one from Tokyo City Flea Market. I drew Marsha the diving creature about a year ago when I was living and working out of Barcelona for a month. I think she mirrored how I was feeling about this long work-travel stint in a completely new place. I have gotten so much better at travel and at life in general this past one year. Glad to be growing πŸ™ Barcelona is beautiful. I did a couple of murals here too that I'll share sometime soon. #somethingsketchytravels #sketchycreatures #barcelona #creativebusiness #creativeentrepreneur #independentartists #illustratorsoninstagram #illustration #indianillustrator
My last afternoon in Japan was pretty magical. I was in the small friendly town of Tsuru, staying at the student run Guesthouse Yukaari. I had to have a quick grocery store lunch before catching the first of my trains to Narito airport. Mana @prng_m the university student volunteer was ironing bedsheets in the common area and two neighborhood girls, Hina and Nonoha dropped by to visit. They convinced us to join them with water balloons in the garden (which I drew each of our faces on) and then insisted on walking me all the way to the train station and waited, waving even when I'd crossed to the other platform until the train pulled up πŸ₯° Blessed to have met such lovely people. What a sweet sweet goodbye to a wonderful trip. #japantravel #japanjournal #somethingsketchytravels #somethingsketchyart #illustratorsoninstagram #illustration #indianillustrator #independentartists #creativebusiness #creativeentrepreneur #creativelifehappylife #japan #tsuru #gueathouseyukaari
Reiwa is the new era in Japan that began on 1 May 2019 the day on which emperor Akihito abdicated the throne for his eldest son Emperor Naruhito. 🌿 An era change is a momentous occasion. The reign of each emperor is usually considered an era, and this is the first time an emperor has ever abdicated the throne so it was quite a big deal. 🌿 They take a good deal of care naming the era. Reiwa which translates to beautiful harmony. 🌿 I escaped the crowds of Golden Week in Tokyo on Reiwa day to spend it in Tsuru, a small town close to Mt Fuji and I had the loveliest two days in this place with beautiful harmonious people πŸ˜πŸ˜‚ I love this town, hopefully I can visit again some day. 🌿 #somethingsketchytravels #japantravel #independentartists #solowomantraveler #creativebusiness #creativeentrepreneur #illustration #illustratorsoninstagram #artandstories #artandtravel #tsuru #japan
Shiba dogs scream Japan to me, 🐢 I met a few of them in person and also they're super beloved and popular and found in a lot of advertising and merchandise everywhere as well. These 3 shibas are inspired by an article I read about a man who cut square holes in his compound wall for them to peep out of. There are 4 varieties of Shiba Inu: red, black, sesame and white. I named the red and sesame ones Yuzu and Momo after two dogs I met in Osaka, and the black one I named Soba because I just like soba noodles. I realise naming your pets after food is a common thing. πŸ€·πŸ˜‚ Swipe for pictures of the cute most adorable shibas I met in Japan πŸ•πŸΆπŸΎ #somethingsketchytravels #illustration #illustratorsoninstagram #indianillustrator #shiba #shibainu #shibadog #japantravel #japan #creativebusiness #independentartists

Goodbyes are so hard! This drawing was great because it helped channel all the feels. Today I left Kyoto for Tokyo and said goodbye to some really lovely friends I've made along the way. Hopefully see them again soon though! A good proper goodbye in stories to make me feel better and onward to the second half of my trip ❀️ #somethingsketchytravels #travelfriends #japan #osaka #kyoto #goodbye #goodbyes #bye #byefriends #independentartists #indianillustrators
We went to a cat Cafe in Osaka called Mocha and met a bunch of pretty cats there. My favourite cat was Eleanor whose smushface you can see pictures of when you swipe. Today is exactly halfway through my trip to Japan and I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. It's been such an colourful, interesting, different two weeks. I want to give each incredible thing I've seen enough reflection and time and documentation. It feels like a whole lot of information and sights and experiences swimming in my head and I needed a minute to just pause and breathe. I came by this coffee shop very close to my hostel in Kyoto this morning and it was such a good surprise. I shared photos of it with my mum and she called it 'The Zen Cafe' but it's official name is Walden Woods Kyoto. There were no tables or chairs. Just some bleachers around the walls in this completely white zen garden like space. I soaked in all the whites and greys and made this illustration which is so unlike me with zero colour. I've never really appreciated greys but I think they're kind of cool actually and I'm excited to get to know them more. Such a relief to not have any visual stimulation for one morning and collect all my thoughts. Sometimes you need to just pause and give your brain a bit of a rest. Yesterday was my birthday. I brought it in at the hostel I have been staying at for the past eleven days with a warm happy picnic and lovely people. I spent the first few hours of my birthday drawing this wall Illustration that features all of the characters from the hostel including Wolf the hostel cat - she's a bit of a gangster cat. Best way to start a new year! 🌸❀️ Check out stories for more birthday happies 🌸 #somethingsketchytravels #mural #wallart #indianillustrators #independentartists #travellingartist #creativebusiness #osaka #japan #poscapens #posca #birthday
I've been so inspired by the art neighborhood of Kitakagaya where my hostel is located. There's so much street art and some amazing exhibitions around. There was one gallery with an installation of paper boats by @24_ayaka Ayaka Nishi that really inspired me. I made this little illo taking colours from a 'K' mural close to the hostel and incorporating some of the paperboats. Swipe for a second option, which do you like better? Also swipe for the paper boats and K mural and check stories for some art around the area ❀️🌸 #somethingsketchy #somethingsketchytravels #somethingsketchyart #osaka #osakajapan #travelgirl #creativebusiness #independentartists #indianillustrators #streetart #artinstallation #kitakagaya
I had two lovely dinners with Pei from Singapore (Japanese curry one night and ramen another) and our walks back to the hostel were sooo cold. She left me these hand warmers before leaving and they are MAGICCCC. I've never seen handwarmers before but you open a packet and take out these small pillows filled with something and they are cold at first but gradually they get hotter and hotter (like magic) and you put them in your coat packet to keep your hands nice and toasty and warm. They stay hot for a good number of hours. I probably won't buy anymore because I have a feeling it's a lot of waste creation, and it's not too unbearably cold here, but I'm sure you get reusable ones too. They're so lovely and brought so much joy. Thanks Pei! ❀️🌸 Wolf our hostel cat approves and says hello! #somethingsketchy #somethingsketchytravels #handwarmers #cold #hygge #warm #travelfriends #independentartists #indianillustrators #creativebusiness #creativeentreprenuers

Tako is Japanese for octopus. When I heard this I couldn't help but think of an octopus taco and how it might be called a Tako Taco in Japan. Is this a dad joke? πŸ˜‚ The famous tako dish here in Osaka is Takoyaki which are spherical balls of batter with a bit of octopus in the centre. I was lucky enough to be able to try a vegetarian version thanks to @barileetraveling :) Swipe for some Tako photos! #somethingsketchy #somethingsketchytravels #somethingsketchyart #tako #takotaco #takoyaki #osaka #japan #independentartists #indianillustrators #creativebusiness #creativeentreprenuers #girltraveler
Travelling for me is a lot about the people I meet and connect with along the way. It was so nice to meet Liz from Brighton on my first day in Osaka and see some of the things here with her. It was so easy to chat, and have lovely conversations, and reminisce over London things (I was born there and lived there till I was 8) So nostalgic listening to some of the British phrases she used in conversation - "Aw b-less!" Was my favourite. And "Jyou know?" a bit like Jamie Oliver. Bless! 😘 You're such a smart lovely girl Liz! All the best with travels and life. See you sometime somewhere 🌸🀞❀️ Also, I don't generally draw people so this was really different and fun for me 😁 #somethingsketchytravels #travelfriends #travelgirl #creativebusiness #independentartists #indianillustrators #illustration #comic #osaka #somethingsketchyart #goodpeople

My first evening in Osaka was spent partly at Shinsekai which translates to "New World". It's an overwhelming area and a sensory overload with neon signs, massive models of different types of food (including some giant crabs) and flashing screens all vying for your attention. It was pretty amazing and so much to see. I'll definitely go back to explore more. Our local friend showed us around which was just perfect because I wouldn't have known where to begin on my own. She took us to a kushikatsu (type of tempura) restaurant and introduced us to some great sake and plum liqueur which I fell in love with. The sketchy creature from the Self Love Calendar for the month of April was Gadalfi the Adventure Lion. I purposely put him on my birthday month because I needed this self love reminder. Travel, adventure, exploration, meeting new people and seeing new places is such a huuuuge part of who I am. It's when I feel most alive, it makes me feel purposeful and like I'm actually living. It's SUCH an important part of who I am that I've even molded what I do for a living and my profession/way of life around being able to do a lot of travel. Somehow over the years I've accumulated some guilt about this. Everytime I'd travel, Id feel this nasty guilt about it, accompanied by a little fear not related to the actual travel. I recently sat down and thought it through. Why was I feeling this way? I found out it was a few deep illogical beliefs bringing me down. If you'd like to know the reasons or feel something similar, DM me and we can chat about it! When I was drawing out Gadalfi for the self love calendar I decided to wholeheartedly accept this part of who I am and not chide myself over something that is such a huge part of my growth and happiness. To practise self love and and envelope myself in the things that give me joy in this short lifetime. πŸ™‚ When I travel, I like to do longer periods of time working out of wherever I am, and slow travel where I get the feel of the place, the people, the everyday life. Not so keen on rushed sight seeing and fast hopping one place to another. When my friends decided on a trip to Japan in April, I decided to plan some long travel around it. I get to spend good time with them as well as do my long slow travel too. Luckily these awesome girls will be around during my birthday πŸŽ‰ and the remaining days will be solo travel. So excited to share this month in Japan with you ❀️ Gadalfi sends love and reminders🌸⭐ #somethingsketchytravels #selflove #travelgirl #travel #illustratorsoninstagram #illustrationart #illustration
So many times on while on this trip it struck me that I wouldn't have felt comfortable in a lot of those situations as a solo woman traveller. Post the metoo wave in October it's like a blindfold has been removed and I see so much more clearly how things are far from equal. No use pulling the wool over our eyes any more. But we can all move the planet towards a better place eventually. Hats off to all the solo women travellers being bosses. It can't be easy but it's awesome they do it and keep breaking boundaries❀️ Tag a boss woman traveller you know or send this to them πŸŒΈπŸ€— #somethingsketchy #somethingsketchytravels #somethingsketchyart #illustratorsoninstagram #illustrationart #independentartists #creativebusiness #creativeentreprenuers #indianillustrators #travel #travelgirl #solowomantraveler
It was lovely staying at Ethnic Cocoon homestay in Bokakhat, Assam for two days, from where I went on a Kaziranga Safari and met a bunch of of rhinos! More safari stories tomorrow. Three years ago around this date I saw some pretty interesting things at the Brooklyn Museum in the lovely company of Brian Goldfarb and Emily Chen. One exhibit was The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago (not pictured here, but I still remember it, it was so interesting) You can look it up if interested. Pictured here are some of the things I saw on that visit- strange signs, very cool paintings on ceilings, a bicycle installation, the whimsical installation of a woman's womb and more. 😍 #illustrator #artist #india #travels #somethingsketchytravels #brooklynmuseum #newyork #art #artists #creativelifehappylife
