72 kg (158 lb) Snatch from @morganwmillican (55 kg)⠀ ⠀ This lift was a touch on the sloppy side, and I think the main catalyst was Morgan coming off balance during the pull.⠀ In the slow motion video, pay attention to her left foot. As the bar passes the knees, her left toes come up off the ground, indicating that she’s pulling too far back on her heels and is off balance. ⠀ ⠀ Coming off balance not only makes you less powerful, but it causes the bar to be pulled into the wrong position as well. This wasn’t a limit weight for her so she was still able to make it, but if we added a few kilos on the bar this would be the difference between a make and a miss. Next week, we will be focusing on her pulling more balanced mid-foot.⠀ ⠀ Leave a comment below!

As impressive as this clean is—and it is impressive!—let’s look at his jerk for a moment. The jerk is the oft-neglected stepchild of the weightlifting world, and it certainly shows in the number of times it’s the phase of the lift that’s missed on the platform. Harrison’s ability to get this weight overhead is the result of doing so many things right, but perhaps none is more important than using his LEGS. Do you think you’re going to get 400+ lbs. overhead by doing a push press? Not with those string bean arms you aren’t! Not even if you’ve been doing curls all summer! Be like Harrison: drive with the LEGS, drive UP, finish through the shoulders, and push yourself into and under the jerk to secure the bar overhead. Now go load 190kg on the bar and give it a shot! (Note: don’t actually do this unless you happen to be Harrison Maurus. Having weight classes is a great way to incorporate athletes across a range of sizes—although it can make comparing across categories more difficult than making a video. Currently the IWF uses something called Robi Points to compare and rank athletes from different categories—e.g., Om’s total at this event (282kg) was worth 968.69 Robi points, while Lasha’s 474kg total was worth an astonishing 1278.7 points.
