Adventures in hamster husbandry. My ritual for hamsters is that I usually discard food when a hamster dies, then buy new when I get a new one. This way, I know the food is as fresh as possible, and I feel like it gives me a nice fresh start with my new hammy. I spent Thursday driving all over Montreal, searching for just the right high-quality hamster foods. Sadly, I went to SIX pet stores before finding everything that I wanted: lab blocks, seed mix, wooden hide, aspen bedding. I'll work on a blog post about it. I tried #verselelaga Hamster Nature for the first time. I started to decant it into a mason jar, but was horrified to see larvae, lots and lots of large larvae in the bag. I closed it, put it into a heavy-duty freezer bag for good measure, and prepared to march back to the store the next day to demand an exchange. I even mentally rehearsed my outraged reaction - I'd be firm, but reasonable. Then as I was literally exiting my car, bag in hand, a thought struck me and I took another look at the package. The larvae - dried mealworms, I think - were featured in the package picture and ingredient list. They were supposed to be there. It's probably what makes it more expensive. So, righteousness deflated and feeling silly, I took it back home and fed it to my overjoyed hamster. In my defense, while I know that hamsters are omnivores, I have always fed mine vegetarian with lab blocks (generally look like kibble or big pellets), so it didn't immediately register that they were mealworms. #ifeelfoolish#hamster#hamsterlife#hamstercare#properhamstercare#hamsterlovers#hamsterlove#hamsterlover#hamstersofmontreal#hamsterfood#hamsterfoods#hamsterfoodie#happyhamster#hamsterhusbandry#petfood#petfoodmatters#mealworm#mealworms#hamsterfoodadventures#catsandhamstersmontreal
Simon enjoying a puff. I swear he only likes me for puffs 😂 . 🗣 We advocate for proper hamster and animal care. (Please do your research before getting a hamster) . The US minimum cage size for hamsters is 𝟒𝟓𝟎 square inches of unbroken floor space! However, bigger cages is always better! If you can, try to aim for 600+ square inches. Most store bought cages will not be over 200. . Hamsters also require at least 6 inches of bedding to burrow which is their natural instinct. The only safe bedding widely available in the US is unscented paper and aspen. Pine, cedar, softwood, baking soda, cotton fluff, and scented paper bedding are NOT safe.
~ 🇬🇧 Priscilla nibbles a delicious mealworm ☺️. ... We were busy with the guinea pig enclosure all day today. @bastlnorman has built the two enclosure parts. I disassembled the big cabinet in the guinea pig room and later put it together again. Inside is our old TV with the Nintendo WiiU. Both the cabinet and the aquarium did not fit at the free wall. So we sawed off the cabinet and used it as a „under-cabinet“ for the new enclosure part. For the TV we get a smaller one. Tomorrow we will add the enclosures extension. Hopefully everything will fit, as planned.🙈😄 ~ 🇩🇪Priscilla nascht einen leckeren Mehlwurm ☺️. ... Hoffentlich passt alles, so wie es geplant war.🙈😄 ~ ~ 🐾🐹pawtners: @das_leben_eines_hamsters @die_hamsterbacken @evonthunderhamsters @hamsterleben_ @hamster.stuebchen @meine_fellnasen_und_ich @nana_einherzfuertiere @ofhamstersandhobbits @robbi_tobbi_und_das_fliewatuet 🐾 ~ #roborowski#roborovski#hamster#zwerghamster#dwarfhamster#roborowskizwerghamster#roborowskihamster#roborovskihamster#roborovskidwarfhamster#robohamster#phodopusroborovskii#ハムスター#倉鼠#хомяк
