Joining the #autumnisforasia readathon! September theme is Fantasy and the book club choice is @kuangrf ‘s The Poppy War. ⚔️ . Loving it so far! So much could happen in a few pages and I am shook. . Check out the lovely book club hosts: @tsundokugirl @theopenbookshelf @thebooksheelf and @whatsallyreadnext ✨💕
This book tells the adventures of a young boy and his uncle. They are often compared but they like different things. This book highlights the relationship between an uncle and a nephew but also anyone who is often compared to their friends, family members or siblings. It's important to remember that you may look alike but you are not the same. Full review up later @ashleyhindswhdb

As I mentioned in my August wrap-up, as soon as Lucille @adragoninspace recommended #inotherlands to me, I knew I had to read it. I immediately put it on hold at the library, started it when it came in a few days later, and was in love at first page. Lucille didn’t oversell this sweet, slice-of-life story at all. . Like so many of my other absolute favorite books, In Other Lands doesn’t have a ton going on in the plot department. The rest is so amazing, though, that I hardly even noticed. The characters are charming and believable (and the main character is a vocal pacifist!). There’s sexual diversity and diversity of species (i.e. intelligent magical creatures). The romance is a slooooow burn, and I ship it 100%. The book is downright hilarious at times, and I found myself laughing again and again. It’s sex-positive. And, most importantly, it addresses so many important themes like sexism, xenophobia, and biphobia. Sarah Rees Brennan takes all these supposedly undeniable truths our society has, turns them on their heads, and shows how utterly absurd they are. In a word: brilliant. . Like any book, it’s not perfect, and I do want to point out a couple things that could be better. I would have liked to have seen a wider range of diversity. It’s great that the main character is bi, but then there’s mention of “both genders,” which is cutting out a whole lot of people. Also, it’s yet another m/m romance written by a white woman. (I’m not saying that’s inherently bad, but I do try to prioritize ownvoices stories.) . I can’t properly express how much I love this book, or how special it feels, but I think everyone should read it. It will really make you stop and think, while at the same time—as Lucille described it to me—staying fun and cosy. . Do you have anyone whose recommendations you trust so absolutely that they immediately get bumped to the top of your TBR? . . #lettucereviewit #sarahreesbrennan #bookstagrammer #diversebooks #lesen

While grieving over her grandfather’s passing, a little girl finds something that he left her — a handmade notebook that he made just for her. She writes and draws all of her “Grandpa memories” on its spring-petal pages. The notebook becomes a meaningful way for her to honor her grandfather and preserve all of their happy moments together. A beautifully poignant story about the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren. Are you a fan of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women? More to The Story by @henakhanbooks is a wonderful middle grade book inspired by the classic. This story features four sisters from a modern American Muslim family living in Georgia. Reading this book was a nice break from my usual fantasy filled novels and it definitely tugged at my heart. I need to go reread Little Women now! But seriously I got to at least not go there on the way to work. Fail. Got some many books between me and mom I had to carry them back home. 📖 GIVEAWAY 📖 Follow @cantonesemommy and visit her Facebook page for our latest book giveaway. Her YouTube channel typically features Cantonese book read-along’s, but in her latest video, she uses our Hong Kong book as an example of how to improvise and translate an English book into Cantonese when reading out loud to your child. This is something a lot of bilingual parents are curious about, as there are so many great English resources that could be leveraged for other language learning. Her channel has a lot of helpful reading tips and introduces parents to many Cantonese picture books. Our giveaway is open until September 23, and open internationally. Another #copyroomread where I was able to work on my Spanish! The message was cute as the girl listed things that fill her heart with happiness. I think it’s PERFECT for teachers to include as social emotional learning by having kids reflect and write on what things bring happiness to their heart. #socialemotionallearning #selreads #myheartfillswithhappiness
“I love a good sci-fi romance. Especially when it features an intelligent, determined (if flawed) heroine who wakes up disoriented and has to gather her wits to survive an impossible situation. The Game Warden’s Mate by A.M. Griffin fit the bill.” Check out our new review of A.M. WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI’s heroine Dimple Shah is one of my favorite female characters I’ve ever read. Headstrong, passionate, and stubborn as all hell, Dimple struggles against the high expectations she holds for herself and the expectations of her parents. Rishi Patel is the challenge she doesn’t see coming, as he flips everything she thought she believed about her own culture and heritage on its head. This brings us an eighteen year old brown girl trying to win a web development competition with an app that could save lives and an eighteen year old brown dude who is a hopeless romantic with a rigid self-discipline that traps his colorful dreams. ⁣⁣ ➵⁣⁣ Sandhya Menon said she wrote this novel because she believed arranged marriage got a bad rap. Writing about an aspect of a culture many discredit as a vestige of patriarchy through the eyes of two teenagers with modern wants, desires, and fears is what makes this story work. Dimple’s rebellious nature is stoked in ambition and a desire for autonomy; she wants to make her parents proud on her own terms, define success in her own words, and fall in love freely. Through Dimple’s feminist musings, first-gen-kid grumbles, and outbursts of self-awareness, Menon teaches us that your truth evolves along with you — expanding, adapting, changing — and you deserve to firmly stand in it no matter what it looked like the day before, even if it is timeworn by tradition, even if it is timeworn by destiny.⁣⁣ ➵⁣⁣ This book left warm and fuzzies in my stomach, because of its smart wit and different representations of love, but also because of its intentionality to accurately reflect the world around us. I am grateful to Menon for the roster of diverse characters in this story, and grateful for her thoughtful writing that moves between sincere figurative language and bold assertions oftentimes in the same sentence. You should’ve seen my face when I learned that there is a companion novel to WHEN

“5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Insightful, Funny, and Heartfelt I enjoyed this collection of poetry immensely. This collection has poetry that is evocative of Southern nights, love lost and found, Black pride, the tenaciousness of racism, and the love between mother and son. Thank you to the brilliant ladies of @aka_lpodetroit for supporting our literacy component for the Genius Patch Field Day and Literacy Fair. I received this book for free at bookcon! Thank you @littlebrownyoungreaders Pavi Sharma is a foster kid and now that’s she’s in a good home she runs a business helping out other foster kids. She has surveys and collects information about their new families, schools, and houses. She’s a pro at the front door face and requests that her clients practice in the mirror. It’s all going well until she finds out that ** is going to be placed in Pavi’s worst ever home... one that she can’t even think about without having nightmares. Can she save her? 💙 Pavi is a really hard worker in school but struggles when she has to choose between spending time on assignments and spending time trying to save a younger foster kid. She has so much going on that her teachers don’t know about. As a teacher it’s a great reminder that when kids are struggling we need to dive deeper. Pavi let’s her foster brother in on her secrets but worries that seeing the other side of her life as a foster kid will change his perspective of her. This book really gets into the importance of knowing a person and not just their single story (how relevant as my school has been talking about this a lot this year!) This is a great middle grades book and just was published this week! Recommending it to any kids or middle grade teachers in your life :) 💙 #currentlyreading #littlebrownyoungreaders #pavisharmasguide #bookstagram #bookcon2019 #singlestory #diversebooks #booksharks #booksandplants #bookish
We are lucky to have some pretty special people as part of our team! Mr. Lawrence Adams happens to be one of them. Lawrence is an advocate for children and literacy. He is a published children’s author, too. Lawrence has been kind enough to find time in his busy schedule as a husband, father, author and manager at @tcctalk to support Genius Patch. Through @tccgives, Lawrence arranged the donation of 200 backpacks and school supplies. He was on hand for the entire Genius Patch Field Day and Literacy Fair to pass them out along with a big smile. His family even came along! Thank you for all you do, Lawrence. The Genius Patch Team greatly appreciates you. 📚🎒
📖 SUMMARY . Ben has been around the New York streets since he left Russia, and has been struggling for a while to get his life back on track. . Jackson has been taking care of his twin long enough not to care about himself, and can barely stand the spastic, overly-social brunette. When the two cross paths once again at the small vestibule of an ATM, the power shutting down and sealing electronic doors doesn't leave him much of a choice. . Ben knows there's something off about these twins, something deeper. Something his hyper mind isn't just making up. And he's right. . Mystify Me's a story about friendship, love, and obsession. Of broken souls being forced by the universe to meet up. Of beauty, sex, and humor, but more than anything—a story about life. . 👉Find the Mystify Me link on the profile description! 👈 . #loveislove #gaycouples #mmromance #mmromancenovel #jacksonben #gayromance #lgbtq #mm #reading #ebooks #bookstagram #gayfiction #booklovers #diversebooks #mmauthor #menwholovemen #lovereading
Did you know that 1 in 5 children come from families who cannot afford school supplies? Imagine the barriers this creates for students in the classroom. Well, we wanted to help change that this year! 📚💚 • Thanks to our friends at @tccgives and @metropcsmi, we were able to giveaway 350 backpacks complete with school supplies at our first annual Genius Patch Field Day and Literacy Fair! We know our contributions didn’t solve all the barriers our children face in learning, but we are committed to continuing to help!🎒🎒🎒
This book shares one perspective of a child hoping to be adopted. It also share the other perspective of parents hoping and preparing for adoption. This story invites conversation around two perspectives and a distinct way families are formed. 📚 book link in profile 📚
So, you like to travel. (Who doesn't 🤷‍♀️?) And your passionate about other cultures. ❤🌍 You probably studied abroad during undergrad to fulfill a Spanish major requirement. 🙋‍♀️ You loved your experience abroad and would like to expose your students to beautiful aspects of their culture, but you don't want to seem like you are "bragging" about your trip or just showing a slideshow of photos just for fun. But, what if I told you there is a way that you can incorporate your travel experience in a purposeful way in the classroom? In a dual language program, it is our responsibility as a teacher to teach our kiddos how to be bilingual, biliterate and bicultural. That's right: bicultural, too. For our novel study, I purposefully picked a main character with Peruvian family heritage. As we are reading the text, I am prompted to share some of my experiences abroad to give my students more background knowledge in Peruvian Culture. So when we read about Chicha morada, Quechua, & Nuevo Sol, I can authentically share aspects of the rich Peruvian culture to not only help comprehension of the text, but also increase their global knowledge. Have you ever traveled abroad before?
