Starting my week's long posts about TDS, I thought I'd give you a brief history lesson. As you know, Tokyo DisneySea's theming is of the sea and nautical exploration. But did you know that the idea for the park was first thought of back in 1988, as "DisneySeas?" It was to be located in Long Beach, California. The idea never came to pass as the Walt Disney Company suffered a financial hardship with then Euro Disney. The Disney company then passed their idea on to the Oriental Land Company to expand their Tokyo Disney resort. OLC agreed and announced plans for a 2nd park in 1988. And so, by the time Tokyo DisneySea finally opened in 2001, its athetics, concept and designs had already been well thought out and developed by the Walt Disney Imagineering team for well over 20 years! Once TDS opened, it was and continues to remain, in my opinion, a true masterpiece. Today, I want to tell you about the AquaSphere and how it came to be the symbol of TDS. It wasn't an easy decision, due to cultural differences between Japan and the United States. For example, in determining the symbol of Tokyo DisneySea, Disney suggested a lighthouse. To many Americans, a lighthouse is a beacon of a safe return from a long journey at sea. But for the Japanese, a lighthouse is a symbol of loneliness, and so, OLC did not think it was an appropriate symbol for their theme park, remember, TDL Resorts are not owned by Disney. After many passionate discussions, the two groups were able to agree on a symbol, the planet Earth as the “water planet." Thus the AquaSphere was born. Here I am in front of the AquaSphere with my pal and former Disneyland Electrical Parade Lead Tim. Tim went on to work for the World Cup Soccer Association and 2002 was when the World Cup came to Japan! That was a neat experience, but I'll save that for another time. Do you like the AquasSphere? Or would you have preferred a lighthouse?#happiestplace #tds#disneyfamily#disneynerd#disneygeek#disneyig
