For the next in our “meet the team” features, meet Orlando Hoilett. Orlando is Predictive Wear’s Lead Hardware Engineer, bringing six years’ prior experience in medical device development. He guides research and development specifically as it relates to hardware design, firmware development, and clinical testing. He is also a PhD student in Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, working on developing wearable sensors for mobile health platforms. He says, “I believe Predictive Wear can provide real data that can impact people's lives. Today is World Alzheimer's Day, a campaign to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. It’s an opportunity for organisations and individuals around the world to highlight issues faced by people affected by dementia and demonstrate how we can overcome them to help people live well with dementia. #alzheimer’s is a complex disease with multiple risk factors. Some, like your age and genetics, are outside your control. However, there are six pillars for a brain-healthy lifestyle that are within your control. Today we want to raise awareness of the six pillars that may help reduce your risk of developing dementia: 1. Regular exercise: Regular physical exercise can reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by up to 50 percent. 2. Social engagement: Staying socially engaged may protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in later life. While many of us become more isolated as we get older, it’s never too late to meet others and develop new friendships 3. Healthy diet: Alzheimer’s is sometimes described as “diabetes of the brain,” and a growing body of research suggests a strong link between metabolic disorders and the signal processing systems. By adjusting your eating habits, however, you can help reduce inflammation and protect your brain. 4. Mental stimulation: Activities involving multiple tasks or requiring communication, interaction, and organization offer the greatest protection. 5. Quality sleep: An increasing number of studies have linked poor sleep to higher levels of beta-amyloid, a sticky brain-clogging protein that in turn further interferes with sleep—especially with the deep sleep necessary for memory formation.
