Battle of Chosin Reservoir From November 27 to December 13, 1950 the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in North Korea occurred. The Chosin Reservoir is a man-made lake located in the northeast of the Korean peninsula. This battle was claimed as the eastern part of the Second Phase Campaign. The western half of the Second Phase Campaign resulted in a Chinese victory in the Battle of the Ch'ongch'on River. The battle took place around one month after the Chinese entered the war. The Chinese wanted to take control of the northeastern region of North Korea, which was currently occupied by the Americans. November 27 was the day the Chinese lead a surprise attack on the U.S X corps who were commanded by General Edward Almond. This battle was known for some of it’s roughest terrain during some of the harshest winter weather conditions of the Korean War. The brutal and cold 17-day battle included 30,000 marines who were encompassed and surrounded by around 120,000 Chinese troops who were commanded by Song Shilun. His orders from Mao Zedong were to eliminate the UN. The battle resulted in the U.S. Eight Army retreating from North Korea and the withdrawal of all U.S. forces from North Korea. This scene depicts a small group from the Eigth Army retreating back with their unit and trying to deal with the freezing cold temperatures.
