What Is Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP)? Our blood is mainly a liquid, also known as plasma, however that liquid is made up of microscopic small solid components including red cells, white cells, and platelets. . While platelets are most associated for their importance in blood clotting, they also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important in the healing of injuries. . Platelet-rich Plasma or “PRP" is plasma with a higher abundance of platelets than what is usually found in blood. This abundance of platelets — and, thereby, the abundance of growth factors — can be as high as 5 to 10 times greater than typical blood. . To create this abundance, blood must first be drawn from a patient. Then the platelets are separated from other blood cells and their abundance is increased during a process called centrifugation. After the increased abundance of platelets is created in centrifugation, those platelets are combined with the remaining blood. So in the end, we have blood that has been given a higher abundance of platelets and therefore healing growth factors.
