Althea’s first @action4ifaw visit to @phylbayer ❤️
That first sight of the ocean between dune grasses, the first taste of salty breeze... it has forever been changed for me, by the experience I had on Cape Cod {hosted} with @action4ifaw & @kintravel . On the 2nd day of our trip {that you too can book for Aug or Sep}, we spent half the day with Katie, Sarah & Brian at one of the IFaW centers where deployment and then later research happens whenever there are whales, dolphins or seals stranded on the Cape. Which, we learned, is quite often. The particular geography of Cape Cod that makes it such a wonderful summer vacation destination for so many here in the USA and the dramatic tides that have lent the area an air of mystery and mysticism going back to whaling days and beyond - can actually wreak havoc on the safety of pinnipeds and cetaceans that call the nearby ocean... home. That plus an increase in fishing by human beings using methods and materials that can cause dramatic harm, means IFaW works basically 365 days a year helping marine mammals as well as doing research and conducting studies to ensure that now and in the future, we can all co-exist to the benefit of all & the detriment of none. . I was naive enough to think before we had this experience that the job might not be *that* hard or the problem *that* bad. But then I saw the photos of seals and whales trapped in fishing line and rope. Photos that made me weep. And I tried to help lift a training dolphin the way rescuers might have to on a beach. Even as part of a team it was not easy. And it was just one task of thousands that they do. . Danté & I have made huge changes in our life to ensure we’re being more responsible citizens of this 🌏. We have a lot more that we still want to do. But we can’t do it all. I’m so grateful to have learned about what IFaW is doing for #peopleandplanet Things I may never be able to do for mammals that I still care a lot about. As for you? Donate to help their work, book this same trip with Kin to learn for

Happy #nationalpigday! To celebrate these amazing #animals, here’s five fun facts about #pigs: 1) Did you know pigs are one of the most #intelligent animals in the world? Curious, insightful, empathetic, and social, pigs are widely considered smarter than dogs, some primates, and even a three-year-old child. 2) Despite their reputation, pigs are actually very #clean animals. If they are given sufficient space, pigs are very careful not to soil the areas where they sleep or eat. 3) You may have heard the common saying “sweating like a pig,” but ironically, pigs actually barely sweat. Pigs do have a few sweat glands, but they're not very useful for temperature adjustment. That’s why pigs love to wallow in mud or water as a means to cool off. 4) Pigs have a tremendous sense of smell. Their sensitive yet powerful snouts are designed for rooting in the ground in search for food. Under natural conditions, pigs may spend 6-8 hours a day foraging, and can smell roots and tubers from as deep as three feet underground. In fact, farmers in France use truffle hogs to sniff out black truffles, one of the most expensive edible mushrooms in the world. 5) You can find wild feral pigs all over the United States, but these wild #hogs are actually an invasive species and not native to America. Pigs were first introduced to the Americas in the 1500’s in the southeastern United States by Spanish conquistador, Hernando De Soto. Some of these domestic pigs escaped into the wild and would become the ancestors of the famous American #razorback pigs. #triviatuesday ❤️🐷🐽❤️ #oink #oinkoink

They say it’s your #birthday?! Well #happybirthday to you @slash, who turns the big 5-0 today. The legendary #rocker is a great friend to #elephants and #ifaw, who shares no appetite for destruction of these beautiful #animals. Recently, #slash and #alterbridge frontman @myleskennedyofficial released a musicvideo for the #song “Beneath the Savage Sun” to benefit #elephantconservation. Join IFAW in thanking Slash for his tremendous contributions to #animalwelfare and wishing him a very happy birthday! ❤️🎸🐘❤️
A happy #humpday for this #beautiful #humpback #whale! ❤️🐋❤️
Look, it’s a penguin…It’s a mandolin…No, it’s a pangolin!…Wait, a what? This little known shy, strange, #scaly #creature holds the unfortunate distinction of being the most trafficked #mammal in the world. American demand for #pangolin scales is fueling a #poaching crisis across the globe and pushing the species toward #extinction. Today, #ifaw and a coalition of #wildlife groups petitioned the U.S. Government to list seven species of #pangolins as “Endangered” under the #endangered Species Act. This #endangered status will go a long way towards stemming the tide of their rapid decline and ensuring the #survival of this fascinating #animal. Visit www.ifaw.org to learn more.
Happy #sharkawarenessday! Today let’s celebrate this iconic #animal of the #sea, but we must also recognize that #sharks are among the most endangered #wildlife on the planet. Every year, humans kill 100 million sharks - often targeted solely for their fins that are used to make soup. Many people fear that a #shark will attack them in the #water whereas the likelihood of that happening is very rare. A #sharkattack is usually classified as an “investigative” bite. Sharks investigate with their mouths. Once they find out that object floating on the surface is not their typical food, they will usually release it and lose interest. Though, here’s a fun #fact: male blue sharks (pictured here) will bite female #blue sharks as a mating technique. So in case you’re ever bitten by a #blueshark, I guess you could take that as a compliment, right? 😉 #triviatuesday Photo: ”Prionace glauca 1" by Mark Conlin/NMFS. Today #ifaw is celebrating #nationalwhaleday in #australia. Join us in encouraging #japan to #stopwhaling. Last year we celebrated a victory. On March 31st the #internationalcourtofjustice ordered Japan to stop its #whaling in the #antarctic, ruling that it was not for the purpose of scientific research and therefore #illegal. So for the first time in a century #whales were safe from #hunting in the Antarctic. However, just when we thought it was all over, #japan is now back with a revised proposal to kill 333 whales every year for the next 12 years and is preparing to proceed with hunting this season. Scientists around the globe have reviewed their plans and concluded that Japan’s proposal to recommence lethal sampling has not been justified. Tell Japan #handsoffmyminkes! Take action at ifaw.org and sign our petition to the Japanese Prime Minister calling on Japan to withdraw its plans to return to the #southernocean. ❤️🐋❤️
In honor of #fathersday yesterday, here’s a shoutout to one of the best #fathers in the #animal Kingdom - the male #wolf. He’s a classic #fatherfigure to a #wolfpack that is essentially a traditional nuclear #family consisting of a mom, dad and kids. He’s an attentive, monogamous and fiercely protective #father who lives with his #babymama for life. After a female wolf gives birth, she sticks close to her helpless pups and doesn't leave her den for several weeks. The male will hunt for the entire family’s food, giving most of the portions to the pups. As the young pup grows, dad takes on a mentoring role, helping integrate the pup into the pack. If that’s not a great #dad who knows how to raise his kids, I don’t know what is!
For Our UK Supporters: We’re delighted that #grammy & multi #brit Award-winning #singer/songwriter #duffy is supporting #ifaw UK’s work to end the annual mass eating of dogs in #yulin, #china. Around the time of the Summer Solstice on June 21, up to 10,000 #dogs could be slaughtered and eaten for the annual event. We need you to join Duffy in lending your supporting #voice to an increasing number of enlightened #animal loving citizens in China, who are opposing this mass #slaughter and calling for a ban. Exciting news today! In celebration of #worldoceansday, @Google is revealing its commitment to exploring and preserving the ocean by bringing us @googlemaps for the #sea! With the help of organizations like @NOAA, #google has made a #streetview version of over 40 #marine sanctuaries around the #world. With just one click, viewers can explore the world beneath the #waves in an exciting new way… whether it’s traveling with humpbacks in the Cook Islands, swimming alongside a sunfish in Bali, or diving with Great Whites in Australia. Most importantly, mapping the #ocean is a key element to it’s #preservation. The ocean is changing at a rapid rate due to #climatechange, #pollution, and #overfishing, making it one of the most serious #environmental issues we face today. With these new #googleimages, we can all witness firsthand these changes, as seen here with the #bleaching of a #coralreef in #americasamoa. So explore Google #underthesea today, and learn how to protect our cherished #oceans! ❤️🌊🌎🌊❤️
A very happy #tigertuesday for Pookie the Tiger! Today, IFAW helped #rescue Pookie from a private owner in #texas who could no longer care for the #tiger. With the help of @InSyncExotics Wildlife Rescue, we’re transporting Pookie almost 1,000 miles to her new #foreverhome at the Black Pine #animal #sanctuary in #albion, #indiana, where she can enjoy the rest of her #life in a natural and enriching setting. Wish Pookie the best of luck on her #move to her #newhome! ❤️🐯❤️
Happy Brother's Day! #siblings are an important part of the #family dynamic, and I am fortunate enough to have a #brother in my life that will be there for me whenever I need him. He’s one of my #bestfriends, and also the #littlebrother that I can blame for everything I do wrong. Like these #adorable #cubs, I couldn’t have asked for a better #playmate. So happy #brothersday, and thanks for always being weird, #bro! ❤️🐻🐻❤️

Today is #endangeredspeciesday. Unfortunately, #planetearth is undergoing the sixth #massextinction event in its history. The main culprit? The #human impact on the #environment from #climatechange, modern agriculture, and overpopulation. The results are apocalyptic: -875 documented extinctions between 1500-2009…Likely thousands more undocumented. -More than 2,500 #animal species currently listed as #criticallyendangered -Some estimates predict that that close to half of ALL LIFE on #earth could become #extinct by the end of the century…Unless We #takeaction NOW! #ifaw is working hard to #protect #endangeredspecies facing #extinction like the world’s largest #bigcat, the Amur (#Siberian) tiger. In the past couple of years, IFAW has helped #rescue and #rehabilitate six orphaned #amur tigers, who were then successfully released back #intothewild. That may seem like only a few, but with less than 350 Amur #tigers left in the #wild, this represents more than one percent of the ENTIRE #amurtiger population! Visit www.ifaw.org to help #endextinction! ❤️🐯❤️
#happymothersday! Meet #mamacat Lucy, who as a #straycat, gave birth to these five #adorable kittens on the streets. Luckily, an #ifaw staffer came #totherescue, fostering the #furryfamily until they all find new #foreverhomes. After Lucy’s done nursing and the kittens are old enough, they will be all be vaccinated and sterilized. Lucy and her #kittens were one of the lucky ones to escape a tragic fate due to #pet #abandonment. Every year in the United States, it’s estimated that 7.9 million pets end up in shelters, often because they are lost or not wanted. These wonderful #animals are just looking for a second chance, just like #momma Lucy and her #babies. You can do your part to help #cats in need. #rescue a #cat from your local shelter or make sure strays in your area are sterilized, so that cats like Lucy can always have a #happyending. Happy #mothersday! ❤️😺🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱❤️
Iconic rock #guitarist @slash and #alterbridge frontman #myleskennedy today released a new #musicvideo for the #song “Beneath the Savage Sun” to benefit #ifaw and #elephantconservation. From their new album, #worldonfire, #beneaththesavagesun tells the story of an #elephant who has lost a loved one to #poachers, from the elephant’s point of view. “How many killing seasons can you justify?” he asks. “How many dead and bleeding…Only for an #ivory lie?” Watch the #video and read their blog on www.ifaw.org. And if you donate just $5 to IFAW’s work to #protect #elephants, you can download the song for free! To donate and download for elephants, visit www.slashonline.com #slashifaw ❤🎧️🐘🎸🐘🎶❤️
The #earthquake’s devastation was instant. Within mere moments, thousands of buildings in #nepal collapsed and thousands of people were killed. Dozens of deadly aftershocks followed. #animals are #suffering too. Thousands of #dogs and #cats suffered blunt force injuries. And as communities try to recover, animals will be at risk of #disease and #starvation. We must act fast! The need for clean water, food, and #medical #care is urgent. That’s why an #ifawwti team is deploying to Nepal to work with local partners who have asked for our help on the ground with #animalrescue efforts. Using the experience we've gained in our #disasterresponse efforts around the world, we are ready for the challenge. We’ll keep you updated! And please keep the people and animals of Nepal in your thoughts, along with those who are sacrificing so much to #rescue and care for them. Happy #earthday! Today, let’s all take a stand to #protect our fragile #coralreefs that are being ‘bleached’ by #globalwarming. When the #ocean warms, the oxygen content reduces, killing the coral’s symbiotic #algae, its major source of nutrition, turning the #coral completely white and pale. A once lush paradise of color is now a ghostly, barren boneyard of sickness and decay. In 2005, the U.S. lost half of its coral reefs in the Caribbean in one year due to a massive bleaching event. Unless we change our ways, most of the world's coral reefs could be killed within our lifetime, jeopardizing 25% of all #marinelife that call it home. But together, we can show the #world a new direction by reducing our #carbonfootprint with simple changes to our daily life. Reduce the amount of driving you do. Carpool, use public transportation, ride your bike or just walk! Literally, every step helps! For #earthday2015, and EVERYDAY, let’s all #takethelead to preserving our coral reefs. Happy #earthday! To #celebrate the 45th anniversary of this very special day, let’s all take a stand to #protect #animals disappearing from human impact on the #environment. Not many people may know this, but #honeybee populations have decreased by 90% since 1962 because of extreme weather changes from #climatechange, #habitat loss, and increased use of bee-killing #pesticides. This may not seem like a big deal to many who see #bees as a pest. But these #insects are an essential part to the fabrication of all #human life. Without #honeybees pollinating our plants, we would lose most of our crops that feed us. To protect this economically important #animal we can plant bee-friendly flowers to aid in their #pollination, or even better, harvest your own bee-hive! Just this past year we installed two #beehives at IFAW Headquarters. For #earthday2015, let’s all #takethelead and help keep honey bees thriving! ❤️🌼🐝🌎🐝🌼❤️
