Cling clang clack went the swords... but what’s the legend? Medieval Literature buffs this is yours. (Hint: it involves a duel between a giant and a knight) #medievalliterature #medieval #legends #myths
Inspiration for this image of Lady Godiva (who, in defiance of her husband, is bloody well making her way to the stables) came from this old favourite, the Hairy Mary of Écouis: early fourteenth-century, hard as stone and sinuously sensual as honey on skin. #medievalsculpture #gothicsculpture #hair #longhair #printmaking #linocut #ladygodiva #linoprint #ink #impressions #art #protest #nudeprotest #historyofwomen

“When [Uther Pendragon] had committed the care of the siege to his intimate friends, [he] underwent the medical applications of Merlin, by whom he was transformed into the likeness of Gorlois; as was Ulfin also into Jordan, and Merlin himself into Bricel; so that nobody could see any remains now of their former likeness. They then set forward on their way to Tintagel, at which they arrived in the evening twilight, and forthwith signified to the porter, that the consul was come; upon which the gates were opened, and the men let in. For what room could there be for suspicion, when Gorlois himself seemed to be there present? The king therefore stayed that night with Igerna, and had the full enjoyment of her, for she was deceived with the false disguise which he had put on, and the artful and amorous discourses wherewith he entertained her. He told her he had left his own place besieged, purely to provide for the safety of her dear self, and the town she was in; so that believing all that he said, she refused him nothing which he desired.’ . . The first record of the Loch Ness monster may be in a medieval saint’s life - ”Also at another time, when the blessed man was for a number of days in the province of the Picts, he had to cross the river Ness. When he reached its bank, he saw a poor fellow being buried by other inhabitants; and the buriers said that, while swimming not long before, he had been seized and most savagely bitten by a water beast. [...] he ordered notwithstanding that one of his companions should swim out and bring back to him, by sailing, a boat that stood on the opposite bank. Hearing this order of the holy and memorable man, Lugne mocu‑Min obeyed without delay, and putting off his clothes, excepting his tunic, plunged into the water. But the monster, whose appetite had earlier been not so much sated as whetted for prey, lurked in the depth of the river. Feeling the water above disturbed by Lugne's swimming, it suddenly swam up to the surface, and with gaping mouth and with great roaring rushed towards the man swimming in the middle of the stream. While all that were there, barbarians and even the brothers, were struck down with extreme terror, the blessed man, who was watching, raised his holy hand and drew the saving sign of the cross in the empty air; and then, invoking the name of God, he commanded the savage beast, and said: "You will go no further. Do not touch the man; turn back speedily". Then, hearing this command of the saint, the beast, as if pulled back with ropes, fled terrified in swift retreat; although it had before approached so close to Lugne as he swam that there was no more than the length of one short pole between man and beast.” . . Gawain enters the Green Chapel . . “‘Now indeed,’ quoth Gawain, ‘desolation is here; this oratory is ugly, with weeds overgrown; well is it seemly for the man clad in green to deal his devotion here in the devil’s wise. Now I feel it’s the Fiend, in my five senses, who set me this meeting to strike at me here. This is a chapel of mischance – bad luck it betide! It is the most cursed church that ever I came to.’ With high helm on his head, his lance in his hand, he roamed up to the roof of that rough dwelling. Then he heard from that high hill, from a hard rock beyond the brook, on the bank, a wondrous brave noise. What! It clanged through the cliff as if it would cleave it, as if on a grindstone one ground a great scythe. What! It whirred and whetted, as water in a mill. What! It rushed and rang, revolting to hear.” . . . Gawain and the Green Knight, ca 1390, with Lud’s Church as the Green Chapel, translated by A. S. Kline . . . print run of 100; £42 with free postage. “There was a common proverb in the mouths of the tribe, that whenever the well-spring of that country was left uncovered […] it would immediately overflow and inundate the whole province. […] It happened, however, that a young woman, who had come to the spring to draw water, after filling her pitcher but before she had closed the well, ran in great haste to her little boy […]. On her way back, she met such a flood of water from the spring that it swept off her and the little boy, and the inundation was so violent that they both, and the whole tribe, with their cattle, were drowned in an hour […]. A not improbable confirmation of this occurrence is found in the fact that the fisherman in that lake see distinctly under the water, in calm weather, ecclesiastical towers.” . . . I showed this photograph to my Gran & she said I have such muscular forearms they could belong to a young man. Assuming the young man in question is hench AF then WAHOO - I AM THRILLED. It’s true, I can pick up heavy things the postman thinks I’ll struggle with & for the past few days I’ve been carrying my parents 25kg, ill dog about 100m to the only field in which he’ll relieve himself, but I also love books & buildings & the old stories they contain, which can’t be touched, let alone lifted. You can see this from the two old books I am reading in front of this mysterious ruined castle. . . “East fared Egil after Olrun, / And Slagfith south to seek for Swan-White. / Wayland alone in Ulfdalir lay, / Red gold he fashioned | with fairest gems, / And rings he strung on ropes of bast; / So for his wife he waited long, / If the fair one home might come to him. /This Nithuth learned, the lord of the Njars, / That Wayland alone in Ulfdalir lay; / By night went his men, their mail-coats were studded,/ [...] And in they went at the end of the hall; / Rings they saw there on ropes of bast, / Seven hundred the hero had. / Off they took them, but all they left / Save one alone which they bore away.” . .
