A quick experiment to produce a practical and pretty kilt for wearing on a hot weather trip. I’m taking my kilts off to Berlin shortly as part of a @britishcouncil and @creativescots European collaborative project near Brandenburg and need a kilt that’s bearable in the heatwave they’re currently experiencing, as well as incorporating some pockets that make budget airline hand luggage restrictions a bit easier too. So this kilt uses 50% less fabric, in two types; one half is a cotton canvas, the other a vintage, checked voile that is lightweight and airy but holds a crisp, sharp pleat. The contrasting burgundy trim hides a deep inner pocket with concealed zip tucked into the front apron and a second outer pocket will attach to the waistband tie that will wrap around in place of traditional buckles. Deconstructivist: fits quite nicely with the project but a bit of a mouthful, think this one has to be ‘The Brandenburg’. 🤞 #kilt#kilts#handmade#design#madeinscotland#madeinmoray#keithkiltschool#practisemakespleats
Three’s a crowd.. of delicious colour and texture. Here’s some of the early stages of development with the current commissions. The Soudant kilt will be heading off to Haarlem in Amsterdam featuring three beautiful Scottish fabrics in a mix of seersucker wools and a needlepoint rib, inlaid with an African handwoven textile to the fringe. The Printmakers kilt, a full length black denim side pleated design with silver and black woven strips inset to each box, sporting some neon pink top stitching and details inside. Last but not least the County Down Irish tartan for the Gaelic choristers kilt, pleated to the alternating stripe to create a distinct back and front and highlight the lovely pastel colours mixed in with the deep browns. . . . #kilts#kiltmaking#madeinscotland#handstitched#madeinmoray#keithkiltschool#scottishcrafts#craftscotland#practisemakespleats#craftscotland
The Forsyth kilt, for the groomsman who wore it so well. The boy was proud of his pleats and boy did he look bonnie in them! His super cool sister made a perfect match, along with the newly wedded Mr & Mrs Hayden. Congratulations and much love to them all. It was an honour xx . . . #kilts#bespoke#handmade#madeinscotland#weddings#practisemakespleats
Not long to go now. Prepping for the pop-up at the #mhorfestival, where I’ll be embroidering the #mohr kilt with the colours of the Glen and providing an insight into the making of traditional handsewn kilts. And if you’re planning a spot in the raft race, good luck. The Chappell-Edwards are in the line up. Your card’s marked.
Here’s the completed Ruskin Kilt, commemorating our latest interpretive work @yorkartgallery; Ruskin, Turner & the Storm Cloud. An exhibition of seminal works by both, as well as extraordinary contemporary ink paintings by Emma Stibbon RA, who has retraced Ruskin’s steps through the French alps, highlighting the effect of climate change on glacial landscapes originally recorded by Ruskin. The fragility of his mental health is explored alongside his concerns for the environment so many years ago. Some of his wise words are written in the lining of my kilt as a fitting reminder each time I wear it, though I’m not so sure he’d approve of my impractical footwear 😳 . . . . #kilts#design#bespoke#handmade#handstitched#madeinscotland#practisemakespleats
